My first foray into role playing games<\/a> (Role-playing_game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"tag\" title=\"wikipedia\">RPG<\/em><\/a>s<\/em>) wasn\u2019t actually an RPG<\/a> at all.<\/p>\n

Rather, it was a computer based word puzzle, \u201cColossal_Cave_Adventure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"tag\" title=\"wikipedia\">The Colossal Cave<\/em><\/a>\u201d aka \u201cAdventure<\/a><\/em>.\u201d I stumbled upon this game during a computer job back in the late 1970s. The game was written in Basic<\/a> and ran on a PDP-11<\/a>. I spent hours playing this silly little game, where commands were as basic as E<\/strong> (for east<\/em>), U<\/strong> (for up<\/em>), and so forth.<\/p>\n

I encountered trolls, and a green snake in the \u201cHall of the Mountain King<\/em>,\u201d gathered treasures, and became lost in a \u201cmaze of twisty little passages all alike<\/a><\/em>.\u201d I learned secret words for teleporting between the cavern (\u2018plugh<\/a><\/em>\u2019) and the house (\u2018xyzzy<\/a>\u2019) at the end of the road, the latter, for stashing accumulated spelunking treasures.<\/p>\n

Adventure<\/a> cemented my love for all things coding.<\/p>\n

I eventually encountered the \u201ctrue<\/em>\u201d (and grandaddy of all<\/em>) RPG<\/a>s, Dungeons & Dragons<\/a> (D&D<\/a><\/em>), where I was often ensconsed in weekend-long campaigns with my engineering cohorts.<\/p>\n

RPG<\/a>s, or rather, Tabletop RPG<\/a>s (TTRPG<\/a>s), as they are now known, and their offshoots, while largely obscure, have continued to flourish, even as online gaming, where multi-user dungeons (MUD<\/a>s) and their object oriented kin (MUD, Object Oriented, MOO<\/a>s<\/em>) attempted to gain their own footholds.<\/p>\n

TTRPG<\/a>s can be further divided into genres. For example Contemporary, Fantasy, Historical, Horror, Humor, SciFi, and so on.<\/p>\n

While hard-core TTRPG<\/a> gamers never strayed far, many of us set them aside for families and careers, the campaigns of yore lost in the cave of time, only to resurface when a TV show such as \u201cStranger Things<\/a>\u201d or a new game in town reminded us of those seemingly simpler times. The latest game attempting to make inroads into the scene is the DeiselPunk<\/a> game, “Fuel Priest<\/strong><\/a>,<\/strong>” created by Timeless Caverns (@TimelessCaverns<\/a><\/em>).<\/p>\n

Though I am quite familiar with Steampunk<\/a> and moreso, Cyberpunk<\/a>, this is admittedly the first time I had heard of Deiselpunk<\/a>. This genre arguably fills the gap that Steampunk<\/a> (Victorian SciFi), and its Progenitor, Cyberpunk<\/a> (Futuristic SciFi), leave. That of 20th Century, more specifically, World War II era, SciFi, with an apocalyptic twist.<\/p>\n

This new game, “Fuel Priest<\/a>,<\/strong>” heavily focuses upon aviation, or rather, the tools of aviation\u2026 planes! So, if you love TTRPG<\/a>s, like I do, follow them on Twitter<\/a>, and head on over to Timeless Caverns KickStarter page<\/a> to donate to the cause.<\/p>\n
